INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 29

In this chapter an account is given of the various offerings on the several remarkable days in the seventh month of the year; at the feast of blowing the trumpets on the first day of the month Numbers 29:1 at the great fast or day of atonement which was the tenth of the month Numbers 29:7 and at the feast of tabernacles which began on the fifteenth day of the same month and continued eight days and the sacrifices of every day are particularly mentioned; of the first day Numbers 29:12 of the second day Numbers 29:17 of the third day Numbers 29:20 of the fourth day Numbers 29:23 of the fifth day Numbers 29:26 of the sixth day Numbers 29:29 of the seventh day Numbers 29:32 and of the eighth day Numbers 29:35 which sacrifices were to be offered besides their vows and freewill offerings of which Moses gave a faithful account according to the command of God Numbers 29:39.

Numbers 29:1   ‘And in the seventh month on the first day of the month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.

   YLT  1`And in the seventh month in the first of the month a holy convocation ye have ye do no servile work; a day of shouting it is to you;

And in the seventh month .... The month Tisri as the Targum of Jonathan which answers to part of our September and October; a month famous for days to be religiously observed having more of them in it than any other month in the year:

on the first day of the month ye shall have a holy convocation; see Leviticus 23:24

ye shall do no servile work; therefore in the place referred to is called a sabbath:

it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you; of which; see Gill on Leviticus 23:24.

Numbers 29:2   2 You shall offer a burnt offering as a sweet aroma to the Lord: one young bull one ram and seven lambs in their first year without blemish.

   YLT  2and ye have prepared a burnt-offering for sweet fragrance to Jehovah: one bullock a son of the herd one ram seven lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

And ye shall offer a burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the Lord .... Which was as follows:

one young bullock one ram and seven lambs of the first year without blemish which was the same only one bullock less with the offerings on the first day of the month the seven days of unleavened bread and the day of the firstfruits Numbers 28:11 Numbers 28:19 Numbers 28:27.

Numbers 29:3   3 Their grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull two-tenths for the ram

   YLT  3and their present flour mixed with oil three-tenth deals for the bullock two-tenth deals for the ram

Verses 3-5

And their meat offering .... Which went along with the creatures offered for a burnt offering; the quantity of flour and oil used in it was the same for a bullock a ram and each lamb as in the offerings at the new moons feast of unleavened bread and the day of firstfruits Numbers 28:10 and a kid of the goats was also offered for a sin offering at this time as in those seasons and for the same purpose to make atonement for the sins of their holy things.

Numbers 29:4   4 and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs;

   YLT  4and one-tenth deal for the one lamb for the seven lambs;

Numbers 29:5   5 also one kid of the goats as a sin offering to make atonement for you;

   YLT  5and one kid of the goats a sin-offering to make atonement for you;

Numbers 29:6   6 besides the burnt offering with its grain offering for the New Moon the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings according to their ordinance as a sweet aroma an offering made by fire to the Lord.

   YLT  6apart from the burnt-offering of the month and its present and the continual burnt-offering and its present and their libations according to their ordinance for sweet fragrance a fire-offering to Jehovah.

Beside the burnt offering of the month and his meat offering .... The bullock ram and seven lambs were offered on this day besides the two bullocks one ram and seven lambs which were offered on it on account of its being the first day of the month and besides the meat offering that went along with them; these were not omitted on account of those additional sacrifices:

and the daily burnt offering; the two lambs of the daily sacrifice; these also were offered as usual so that there were offered on this day three bullocks two rams and sixteen lambs:

and his meat offering and their drink offerings according to their manner; these also were offered with the daily sacrifice according to the law and rule prescribed for the making of them and all were

for a sweet savour a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord; for they were burnt sacrifices and very acceptable to the Lord as they were types of the better sacrifice with which he is infinitely well pleased; and it is with respect to that that such a number of sacrifices were appointed.

Numbers 29:7   7 ‘On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls; you shall not do any work.

   YLT  7`And on the tenth of this seventh month a holy convocation ye have and ye have humbled your souls; ye do no work;

And ye shall have on the tenth day of the seventh month an holy convocation .... The month Tisri as before; so the Targum of Jonathan:

and ye shall afflict your souls; or persons; their bodies by fasting and their souls by repentance and humiliation; for this was a grand fast as it is called Acts 27:9

ye shall not do any work therein; see Leviticus 23:28.

Numbers 29:8   8 You shall present a burnt offering to the Lord as a sweet aroma: one young bull one ram and seven lambs in their first year. Be sure they are without blemish.

   YLT  8and ye have brought near a burnt-offering to Jehovah a sweet fragrance one bullock a son of the herd one ram seven lambs sons of a year perfect ones they are for you

But ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the Lord .... Which is the same as ordered to be offered on the first day Numbers 29:2. Aben Ezra is of opinion that the ram here is different from those in Leviticus 16:3.

Numbers 29:9   9 Their grain offering shall be of fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull two-tenths for the one ram

   YLT  9and their present flour mixed with oil three-tenth deals for the bullock two-tenth deals for the one ram

Verse 9-10

And their meat offering .... Which was of the same quantity of flour and oil for a bullock a ram and a lamb as for the meat offering on the first day of the month.

Numbers 29:10   10 and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs;

   YLT  10a several tenth deal for the one lamb for the seven lambs

Numbers 29:11   11 also one kid of the goats as a sin offering besides the sin offering for atonement the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings.

   YLT  11one kid of the goats a sin-offering; apart from the sin-offering of the atonements and the continual burnt-offering and its present and their libations.

One kid of the goats for a sin offering .... This also as it was different from that which was offered for the service of the day so it was offered after it; as is observed by the Jewish writers that the goat which was offered without though of the Musaphim or additions could not go before the service of the day for it is said as follows:

beside the sin offering of atonement; hence say they we learn that the goat within which was of the service of the day went before itF14Bartenora in Misn. Yoma c. 7. sect. 3. ; after that the ram of Aaron and the ram of the people and after that the fat of the sin offering:

and the continual burnt offering and the meat offering of it and their drink offerings; which were never omitted on account of the service of any day though ever so solemn as this was: hence it appears that there were offered on this day of atonement two bullocks three rams three goats and two lambs.

Numbers 29:12   12 ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work and you shall keep a feast to the Lord seven days.

   YLT  12`And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month a holy convocation ye have; ye do no servile work; and ye have celebrated a festival to Jehovah seven days

And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation .... Of the same month Tisri which was the seventh from Nisan or Abib though it was formerly the first month of the year:

ye shall do no servile work and ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days; the feast of tabernacles which began on the fifteenth day of this month.

Numbers 29:13   13 You shall present a burnt offering an offering made by fire as a sweet aroma to the Lord: thirteen young bulls two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year. They shall be without blemish.

   YLT  13and have brought near a burnt-offering a fire-offering a sweet fragrance to Jehovah; thirteen bullocks sons of the herd two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year; perfect ones they are;

Verses 13-34

And ye shall offer a burnt offering .... That is on the first of the seven days which was as follows:

thirteen young bullocks two rams and fourteen lambs of the first year they shall be without blemish; a very large sacrifice indeed for these were offered besides one kid of the goats for a sin offering and the two lambs of the daily sacrifice which were not omitted on account of this extraordinary offering; so that there were no less than thirty two animals sacrificed on this day: the meat and drink offerings for each according to the kind of them were as usual and as before frequently observed; and the same sacrifices meat offerings and drink offerings were offered on the six following days of the feast only with this difference that there was one bullock less every day; which it is thought may denote the decrease of sin in the people and so an increase of holiness or rather the gradual waxing old and vanishing away of the ceremonial law and the sacrifices of it; and these bullocks ending in the number seven which is a number may lead us to think of the great sacrifice these all typified whereby Christ has perfected them that are sanctified.

Numbers 29:14   14 Their grain offering shall be of fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each of the thirteen bulls two-tenths for each of the two rams

   YLT  14and their present flour mixed with oil three-tenth deals to the one bullock for the thirteen bullocks two-tenth deals to the one ram for the two rams

Numbers 29:15   15 and one-tenth for each of the fourteen lambs;

   YLT  15and a several tenth deal to the one lamb for the fourteen lambs

Numbers 29:16   16 also one kid of the goats as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  16and one kid of the goats a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:17   17 ‘On the second day present twelve young bulls two rams fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  17`And on the second day twelve bullocks sons of the herd two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:18   18 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  18and their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the sheep in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:19   19 also one kid of the goats as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings.

   YLT  19and one kid of the goats a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering and its present and their libations.

Numbers 29:20   20 ‘On the third day present eleven bulls two rams fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  20`And on the third day eleven bullocks two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:21   21 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  21and their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:22   22 also one goat as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  22and one goat a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering and its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:23   23 ‘On the fourth day present ten bulls two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  23`And on the fourth day ten bullocks two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:24   24 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  24their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:25   25 also one kid of the goats as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  25and one kid of the goats a sin-offering apart from the continual burnt-offering its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:26   26 ‘On the fifth day present nine bulls two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  26`And on the fifth day nine bullocks two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:27   27 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  27and their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:28   28 also one goat as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  28and one goat a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering and its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:29   29 ‘On the sixth day present eight bulls two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  29`And on the sixth day eight bullocks two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:30   30 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  30and their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:31   31 also one goat as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  31and one goat a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:32   32 ‘On the seventh day present seven bulls two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  32`And on the seventh day seven bullocks two rams fourteen lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Numbers 29:33   33 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  33and their present and their libations for the bullocks for the rams and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:34   34 also one goat as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  34and one goat a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:35   35 ‘On the eighth day you shall have a sacred assembly. You shall do no customary work.

   YLT  35`On the eighth day a restraint ye have ye do no servile work;

On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly .... The day after the seven days of the feast of tabernacles were ended; for this was not properly a part of that feast but was a sort of appendage to it:

ye shall do no servile work therein; See Gill on Leviticus 23:36.

Numbers 29:36   36 You shall present a burnt offering an offering made by fire as a sweet aroma to the Lord: one bull one ram seven lambs in their first year without blemish

   YLT  36and ye have brought near a burnt-offering a fire-offering a sweet fragrance to Jehovah; one bullock one ram seven lambs sons of a year perfect ones;

Verses 36-38

But ye shall offer a burnt offering .... Which was the same that was offered on the first and tenth days of this month Numbers 29:2 and the meat and drink offerings for each of the creatures were the same as often expressed; and on this day a goat for a sin offering was also offered besides the daily sacrifice and what went along with that.

Numbers 29:37   37 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull for the ram and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance;

   YLT  37their present and their libations for the bullock for the ram and for the lambs in their number according to the ordinance;

Numbers 29:38   38 also one goat as a sin offering besides the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering.

   YLT  38and one goat a sin-offering; apart from the continual burnt-offering and its present and its libation.

Numbers 29:39   39 ‘These you shall present to the Lord at your appointed feasts (besides your vowed offerings and your freewill offerings) as your burnt offerings and your grain offerings as your drink offerings and your peace offerings.’”

   YLT  39`These ye prepare to Jehovah in your appointed seasons apart from your vows and your free-will offerings for your burnt-offerings and for your presents and for your libations and for your peace-offerings.'

These things ye shall do to the Lord in your set feasts .... Or rather in the times set and appointed to you as the Jewish writersF15Maimon. & Bartenora in Misn. Pesach c. 7. sect. 4. interpret it; and so Jarchi interprets it of a fixed time which seems better; since these were not all feast days on which the above sacrifices were to be offered for one of them was a fast even the day of atonement:

besides your vows and your freewill offerings: which might be offered up at any time notwithstanding the above sacrifices which were necessary and obligatory; but these were at their own option:

for your burnt offerings and for your meat offerings and your drink offerings and for your peace offerings; of which see Leviticus 7:11.

Numbers 29:40   40 So Moses told the children of Israel everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.

   YLT  40And Moses saith unto the sons of Israel according to all that Jehovah hath commanded Moses.

And Moses told the children of Israel .... All these things; repeated the several laws unto them concerning the above sacrifices with the additions unto them and explanations of them:

according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; being a faithful servant to the Lord in all his house and in all things appertaining to it.
